Back to Basics – Guest Designer

Karyn Campbell

Karyn Campbell

Hi I am Karyn. I reside in Ohio with my husband and daughter, and I have been crafting on and off for my entire life: different avenues such as counted cross stitch, poetry, drawing, crochet, decoupage, and any other thing I could get my hands on.

While away camping for a weekend my daughter and I attended a stamping demo in the “big barn” where we ended up stamping the afternoon away. My daughter picked out one set of stamps and an inkpad to buy; I didn’t pick anything but DID take the catalog they gave me to look at! Of course the next day and many days thereafter I found this or that which I HAD to have! Now all these years and supplies later, I tend to focus on rubber stamped cards with occasional projects like pins, altered items and magnets thrown in for good measure.

I am part of the Creative Council for FireCracker Designs by Pamela and have been part of a couple other Design Teams and Guest Designer for other stamp companies and ezines during 2009. I share my work thru my blog Stamping Stuff (http://afrogladycreation.com) and would love to have you join me there!  I love Stamper's Quest and am honored to be a Guest Designer for them!

What a challenge this theme turned out to be for me.  I guess we never really think about all the things we have accumulated as being more than “basic.” I challenged myself to really think what would a basic set of stamping supplies be and how can you use them to make a card that isn’t so “basic.”

The list I came up with of basic stamping supplies:

  • Stamps
  • Ink
  • Paper
  • Adhesive
  • Scissors/Cutting Tools
  • Coloring tools (pen, markers, pencils, crayons – whatever you already have on hand)

Using these supplies I came up with a card that you can easily make and tailor to whatever occasion you need.

I asked some of my fellow stampers what they consider basics and here are some other items you might find in your home that you already have on hand, any of them would make a lovely addition to a card also.

  • Ribbon
  • Buttons
  • Wire
  • Tags
  • Stickers
  • Felt/Cloth
  • Paint
  • Decorative scissors
  • Artificial flowers

I encourage you to use what you have on hand to make the card your own and personalize it for the recipient.

Tut-1Gather Supplies

  1. Cut base card of 8 ½” x 5 ½” from white (Sweet Tooth Pop Tones) cardstock and score/fold in half at 4 ¼”.
  2. Tut-2CutCardBase

  3. Stamp the main image two or three times on scrap white (Sweet Tooth pop Tones) cardstock. Be sure to get a clean crisp impression each time. Also stamp on card base one time.
  4. Tut-3StampFlowers

  5. Color flowers as desired, including image on the base card. I used Crayola Watercolor Pencils.
  6. Tut-4ColorFlowers

  7. Cut out flower tops from the additional stamped images. You can layer this up as much as you want. I cut two for the top flower and one for the bottom flower.

  9. Cut a piece of Berrylicious paper 4 ¼” x 3”. Randomly stamp LOVE image from Chicory stamp set all over Berrylicious paper.
  10. Tut-6StampLove

  11. Adhere Berrylicious paper to side of card front.
  12. Tut-7AdhereBluePaper

  13. Use adhesive to adhere cut out flowers over the stamped and colored flowers on the base card. Gently push petals up to give depth to them.
  14. Tut-8TapeFlowers

  15. Stamp Happy from Happy Everything Stamp Set onto card base.
  16. Tut-9StampHappy

NOTE: If you happen to have additional items on hand or around the house you can jazz up the card more, as desired. For instance, I found a few misc. rhinestones, a couple Fiskars Rain Dots and a page pebble and added them to the front of the card and now it looks like this:

  6. I like the "basics".........sometimes I think we get lost in all the various techniques - at least I do. I do like learning new things, but seem to go back to basics most of the time.
