The Doorway to Adventure

Open doors. For most of the world, January is a time to keep the doors tightly closed. It's either the coldest or the hottest month of the year, depending on which side of the equator you happen to ride.  So, why title this editorial "the doorway" to anything? The word "January" comes from the Latin word, ianua, which means "door."  The Roman god, Janus, was the god of gates and doors, beginnings and ending. Each January is an opportunity to open the door to fresh resolutions, goals, and things to learn.

I gave up "official" New Year's Resolutions a long time ago, but I do look at January as a time to consider what the new year may hold for me and to imagine what new adventures lay in store. I've signed up to walk a half-marathon in April, committed to a bi-weekly digital art project, and determined to send one card to one random person per month. I figure these are measurable plans with a high potential for success.  I like opening that kind of door--a little uncertainty, a little adventure, and a consistent measurement of accomplishment!

Here are Stamper's Quest we have already opened the door to 2009 with an issue full of brilliant ideas. Later this week we will open the door to a new Artistic Guide who will then open creative doors for you. The door opens on reader submission artwork this month, and each Monday doors will open to places yet unknown. What doors will you open in 2009?

Awaken your Muse!
